making money

When most of us think about being “in business” we think of people who get into business to make money. The most common perception of “business” is that of operating a commercial venture to make money. It doesn’t matter much what that business actually is or does. What matters is that it is effective at generating profits. The work is making money.

There are many mentors and coaches out there who can teach anyone to be in business this way. Pick a venture suitable for you (your available resources and potential markets), set it up, and run it profitably. The most recent one I saw was how to set up an Amazon business. The marketing material is very concise and clear - they will teach you how to be financially successful. It is all about the money.

(There is nothing wrong with going into business with the primary aim to make money. I am not bashing people who are driven by making money.)

There is another way of doing/using business that we hear less about. This is where someone uses business as the vehicle to enable and further their work. Artists, musicians, designers, psychotherapists, dentists, doctors, childcarers… These professionals are primarily focused on their work. They are in business because that is the framework that best enables them to do their work. They are often not even that interested in the business itself, preferring to outsource management responsibility to managers.

There are opportunities here to help these professionals connect with their business, to see business as a more integrated tool within their non-business work, to embrace the work of business.
