asgard

Discovering the Asgard at the Museum Decorative Arts & History in Dublin prompted this post.

The fact that one single object can come to be so intimately tied to a country's history is astounding.

As more and more significant human activities - such as war - move into the virtual space of the Internet, I can't help but wonder what an Asgard of our time would be like.

Will it be a piece of physical hardware? Something that one day will be put on display in a museum? Or will it be formless ideas, intangible memes and paradigms? Not “real” but can fuel real actions. And afterwards, quietly evaporate into the night of history.

Can we design objects to become receptacles of history? Are war memorials such objects?
