Singapore’s Orchard Road shopping strip is currently undergoing massive renovations. Recently, these bright blue (lit) strips appeared as decorations on some of the sidewalks. They ran across the flow of traffic, at (my guess) 5-8m intervals.

Instead of running the strips across the flow of traffic, I thought it would have been more useful to run them parallel to the flow. This is an opportunity missed to actually use the idea for a useful functional purpose.

By running the strips along the sidewalks, they would help encourage pedestrians to walk in straight lines (something the crowds here seem to need help with) and thus facilitate smoother traffic flow.

By running across the flow of traffic, and by being so bright, the strips create a visual hindrance that could slow the flow.

But who cares I guess. It’s only a bit of facile decoration right…
