collective narcissism is directing world politics

“collective narcissism is … when [members of an in-group] exhibits an exaggerated belief in the superiority of their in-group, be that a gang, religion or nation, but deep down feels doubtful about their group’s prestige and therefore craves its recognition by others.”

This is an interesting concept I have not considered prior to coming across this BBC article – How ‘collective narcissism’ is directing world politics.

It explains the behaviours of the staunch believers, of any in-group. Underlying the zealous championing of their cause, there is always a sense of deep-seated desperate uncertainty. They behave as if the only way to assuage this desperate uncertainty is with the recognition and validation of others, especially if others join their in-group.
