diamond-cutting

When a raw diamond is turned into a gemstone, more than 60 to 70 percent of the material is lost in the the cutting process (a 30-40% yield).

At the same time,  the value of the remaining material increases significantly (more than double) and more than makes up for the lost material.

This is value adding through judicious editing, paring down and concentrating.

Like distilling whiskey. Where most of the water is driven off. Quality over quantity.

Like editing a book or other piece of writing. In the prices the fewer words carry more potent meaning more succinctly.

Like the curation of a collection. To make a potentially overwhelming mass of stuff more accessible, and to support the making of meaning.
