“All white-collar work is project work. The single salient fact that touches all of our lives is that work is being reinvented.” -- Tom Peters

Thinking of work as a series of projects is like serial monogamy: a string of sequential commitments to different projects; after which everyone remains on good terms, and re-engagements with any or all are ok.

Instead of a linear progression of long-term (and even hopefully forever) jobs as possible, we are looking at a mesh of projects.

Some projects may be steps backwards (financially, experientially, learning-wise etc.) Others may be fantastic leaps ahead. Overall the whole mesh moves forward in terms of growth, learning and experience.

The idea of lifelong employment in a single job is less real than ever before.

Work as a serial monogamist stops us feeling trapped by doing the same thing forever and ever. It acknowledges and celebrates change. As opportunities to diversify and experiment.

It forces us to trust ourselves and the value of our contributions. We can thrive in a world that changes all the time!
