Minimalism win, usability fail

On the left is the normal lighting set up for the elevators. Nice, simple and swish. Love it.

When the elevator is on the move, a green or red light shows above the door. Again, very minimalist. And in keeping with the general interior fit-out.

But wait – which direction is the elevator going?

How many people know the colour convention for elevator direction? And if they did, how many can actually remember it?

I didn’t know. And every time I am in this building I get confused by the elevators.

“Direction indicators are sometimes etched with arrows or shaped like arrows and/or use the convention that one that lights up red means “down” and green means “up”.
