eicolab: design thinking for business innovation

If you don’t need it…

“If you don’t need it, leave it!” said the train conductor in the movie The Taking of Pelham 123 as she led hostages off the train.

I don’t know about you, but for someone who doesn’t actually buy that much stuff (besides books), I still manage to accrete it over time. Worse still, I get attached to them. This makes it that much harder to stay mobile. That much harder to move in response to the next opportunity.

I accrete mental stuff too… The problem with stuff is, they get in the way of meaning. The more stuff we have, the less meaningful they become.

Less stuff = more meaning. An episode of Oprah dealt with getting rid of stuff so as to go back to the basics; to re-discover meaning.

This is the same with business communications. The more stuff a business puts into its communications, the more padding, the less able that business is to build real person-to-person connections.
