eicolab: design thinking for business innovation

Collectivist and Individualist societies

“Collectivist cultures, like Japan and other Confucian nations, value social harmony more than any one person’s happiness.”

“Individualistic cultures, like the United States, value personal satisfaction more than communal harmony.”

From Eric Weiner’s book The Geography of Bliss: One Grump’s Search For The Happiest Places In The World. ISBN 978-0-446-69889-4.

Similarly, individuals and businesses have cultures that are more towards one type or the other. This is probably where the idea of “culture fit” comes in.

Will choosing a business culture that is contrary to the dominant societal culture be a useful way for differentiation? Is it even possible to consciously choose to configure a particular culture? Or is it innate to each individual?
