eicolab: design thinking for business innovation

A shameful waste

Watch this.

I was speechless and horrified. I know this happens, I just had not realised it is at this scale. I can’t even start to think about how this could be “made better”…

I just don’t understand it…not only is it socially terrible that there are people starving and homeless that could use this food, but it’s also bad business practice…throwing $$$$ out of the door.

The most likely reason I can think of for this insanity is this: fear of legal retribution.

IF they gave their unsold food away, AND someone got sick eating it, then who is to blame?

If they gave away expired (but still viable*) food, AND someone thought it made them sick, who will pay the compensation?

So it is potentially cheaper to throw this away. Cheaper because we are currently not really paying for the full cost of things anyway…

    * I have seen expiry dates on salt and bottled water. I don’t need to explain why this is just so wrong, right?
