While on a walk to get dinner last night, it occurred to be that many of the problems we face as a society today are a result of us redefining what used to be luxuries, as necessities.

Cars used to be a luxury (for short distance travel especially). Now they are a necessity. I certainly used to believe I could not live without a car. Similarly a TV in every room, even on the fridge; hundreds of TV channels showing the same stuff; everything so cheap we can throw it all away without a thought; food so abundant we can afford to be ultra choosey and wasteful; safe water so available we can now need to import bottles from Europe...

Cakes and all manner of baked goodies used to be once-in-a-blue-moon treats. Now we need them for dessert for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Affluenza is a great word.
