eicolab: design thinking for business innovation

Change the world (without doing too much)

Hooking up your computer to the World Community Grid is one of the easiest ways to make a difference to our world.

And you don’t have to do anything other than the initial sign up and download.

When you are not actively using your computer (eg you are on the phone, sipping coffee, or pondering a sentence on your screen), the processor on your computer automatically starts working on tough mathematical problems to help fight cancer, AIDS, and muscular dystrophy. You won’t even notice this happening. How amazing is that!

Why stop at your own computer? Why not sign up all the computers in your office or home?

I have been a member since 2005.

This is a fun way to learn about what grid computing is.

This does, of course, conflict with your previous post about saving energy. Leaving your computer running, doing computationally-expensive calculations, means it’s probably using more electricity than when you’re “just” using it as a word processor. Ah, these decisions are so tricky…!
