Corner computer shops ripe for reboot

Have you noticed how many computer shops there are around the place? Have you also noticed how they all have virtually indistinguishable wares on display, or have their windows covered by faded posters of last-generation Intel CPUs? The reseller margins are low. Technology is cheap. Everything is more or less the same. More “everyday” people are buying computers. Computers remain confusing and complicated to the “everyday” person. The pain was “I can’t afford a computer.” The pain is now “How do I use this thing or fix this damned problem?” Given these factors, the time is ripe for new thinking on the corner computer shop concept. What does that next-generation, sustainable, profitable corner computer shop look like?

If they’re about support, then these new corner computer stores might look like the Genius Bars, Apple UK’s new walk-in support stores in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield and Kent.

Walk in, take your number — or even better, make a booking online before you turn up — and the geek on duty will help you. All very slick and fashionable, because it’s Apple.
